Death-watch beetle attacks both sapwood and heartwood of decaying timber and is usually associated with moisture ingress. Identification is by disc shaped pellets.

Treatment of reasonably sound timbers can be by insecticide, but surface treatment does not guarantee adequate elimination of the infestation.

Decadet micro-bore probing can detect the extent of any internal deterioration. From analysis of the section the general loading strength can be determined.
